The Role of GIS Mapping in Disaster Relief

In recent months, we have seen GIS Mapping Technology used in a dynamic way, as GIS leaders like ESRI have created earthquake response resources following the Jan. 12th earthquake in Port au Pince Haiti, and the Feb. 27th earthquake on the central coast of Chile. This application of GIS mapping technology breaks down the silos of private sector companies, public sector ministries, and IFI's, and efficiently pools resources, facilitating a quick response to disaster relief efforts.  GIS technology will be a critical piece of the complex infrastructure rebuilding process that will be taking place in both countries in the coming years, and the Leadership Forum is currently analyzing ways to address these complexities at the 8th Annual Latin American Leadership Forum.
