Sensors Anywhere - ICT 2008 - Lyon

PR - To encourage investment, and to make environmental monitoring economically viable, it is necessary to (1) develop information systems that facilitate sharing of information over administrative and domain borders; (2) develop algorithms and applications capable of handling the newly available information; and (3) identify new business oriented approaches for creating and protecting business value from the data, and facilitate the marketing of this data and associated capabilities in a single information space in Europe allowing the development of value chains from the information sources to the customer.

With this in mind, SANY IP partners proposed a networking session called "Technology and economy of European environmental information space". Although officially initiated by the SANY IP, this networking session is open for everyone interested in technological and economic sustainability of the emerging European environmental information systems. We are looking for answers to the following questions:

  • Which applications require further integration and interconnectivity between existing environmental monitoring systems?
  • Which emerging applications are likely to increas the demand for more, better, or simply different types of environmental monitoring systems?
  • How much are the end users really able/ready to pay for these applications?
  • What are the options for new business models adapted to an open web of interconnected, distributed environmental services?
  • Which existing or emerging technologies could be used to build the missing infrastructure?
  • Which major technical and non-technical issues remain to be solved?
  • What important question did we forget in this list? :-)

If you are interested in discussing these topics with leading european ICT researchers, please join our "Technology and economy of European environmental information space" networking session on ICT 2008 in Lyon!

IMPORTANT: Our Networking Session is on day 2 (26-11-2008), from 11:00 to 12:30. The size of the room assigned to our session depends on the number of people interested in the session, and this number might be estimated on the basis of the comments you leave on the networking session web page.

Call for presentations

The participation is also possible through keynote presentation(s). Our idea is to have an overview/introduction to the session, followed by 2-3 presentations about existing, emerging or yet to be developed technology, and 2-3 presentations about the user requirements, novel use cases and/or sustainable business models. Due to short time, we can not accept more than six presentations a 10-15 minutes. Remaining 1/2 hour will be reserved for discussion.

The rules for presentations are:

  1. The focus must not be on current research projects, but on lessons learned and ideas and needs for future projects.
  2. Presentations should be short (10-15 minutes) and discuss one topic. Topics should be generic, but use of concrete examples is encouraged to facilitate understanding.
  3. Only the presentations announced on the above web page not later than November 15-th have a chance to be accepted. A title and a short summary (2-3 sentences) is sufficient.
  4. We need your contact information, so please send the summary to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it per e-mail as well.

In case you wish to contribute some illustration to the discussion, please send 1-2 power point slides or images to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). For all other questions related to this networking session, please follow the link below:
