PERSPECTIVES
"If the world cannot come to agreement on NAVSTAR and GALILEO GPS systems, where does that leave programs like GSDI?"
|
|
"A satellite-based navigation and positioning system (GPS) is a primary requirement today for many geospatial initiatives to be realised. The global spatial data infrastructure (GSDI) will evolve through technology, knowledge and governance. While governments may fear a degraded GPS signal in the future, past history suggests otherwise - and other government collaboration issues are more of an issue. Nevertheless, GSDI is a data-centric initiative and depends upon available and dependable data that can be used for global purposes."

|
"The question of global cooperation and coordination of geospatial
efforts is an important one. There are many fronts where global
cooperation is necessary, including navigation and positioning tools,
data sharing, and monitoring. Our world is a seamless place with only
our own fabricated political boundaries, and the management of our
impact on the planet must take a holistic and boundary-free approach if
we’re going to continue to enhance our collective standard of living. "

A
definition for the purpose of cities is long overdue. To address urgent
concerns for sustainability and the health of humans and the biosphere,
the purpose of the city must be to generate health and enhance
sustainability. This is a major historical shift, but the city has the
power and reach to achieve it, as Ian Douglas observed in 1983 “The
urban eco-system is the most elaborate geographical control-system or
integrated resource-management system in human experience.”
The requirements on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have
originally been focused on data capturing and mapping functionalities.
Current analyses state very clearly, that 80% of all technical business
processes are related with geospatial questions. That’s why an
intelligent Pipeline Integrity Management System (PIMS) is more than
reasonable for pipeline operators, and we introduce a GIS
and geodata-based PIMS which makes it possible to establish a pipeline
integrity management system.

processes and people in different geographical locations. The most
effective maps are designed and include several cartographic elements. Designed Maps
provides numerous helpful clues for users to create more effective and
useful maps and several examples using different techniques are
included.
