The 3rd symposium is driven by the recent GOFC-GOLD activities with the Group on Observation (GEO), the UN conventions including the United Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the related implementation plan of the Global Climate Observing system (GCOS), the development of the IGOS-P theme for Integrated Global Observations for Land (IGOL), and activities of GTOS, the FAO Forest Resources Assessment 2010 Global Remote Sensing Survey, the GOFC-GOLD regional networks, the European Space Agency and the GLOBCOVER project, and the UN Global Land Cover Network. The meeting is a continuation of international meetings of the GOFC-GOLD land cover project office at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2004 and 2006.

ObjectivesThe objectives include:
- Present and assess GOFC-GOLD progress in various areas and activities,
- Review the overall GOFC-GOLD strategy and defined future priorities and areas of activity including interactions with political and policy processes,
- Engage the global community of forest and land cover monitoring experts to develop technical consensus in critical areas such as:
- Reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD)
- Boreal forest monitoring
- Development of standards and reporting guidelines
- Assessment and validation of forest and land cover change
- Linking global and regional land mapping and monitoring initiatives
- Formulate action plan for the land cover team and its partners.
