In the run-up to the ESRI Eastern African User Conference for 2007 (here in Kampala, September 13-14), a workshop will be organised on the topic of design methods for SDI. The workshop will address the question whether standardisation on designs, designs methods and implementation techniques to build SDI nodes, needs to be pursued, and if so, how it can be achieved. This will be a half-day workshop.
In the workshop, we will bring to the table the principle that a loosely organised network of similar minded agencies should agree to standardise firstly on the design methods, and not only on the software platforms, data formats, protocols and interfaces. Areas like data modelling, architectural design, and service function specifications would benefit if design templates, standardised languages and design transformations are made available for sharing. It will allow the SDI community to build systems more systematically, to learn from not only own mistakes, but also from those of others, and to share in improved solutions. The workshop aims at identifying those steps that need to be undertaken to achieve such a collaborative setting.
The workshop is organised and sponsored by ITC, The Netherlands, specifically ITC's SDI Technology research group in collaboration with ESRI Eastern Africa. Participation is free, though limited, and possible only after registration with the organisers.
