Sustainability assessment and reporting, namely through the use of indicators, is a growing practice, as seen by the multiple national and international efforts, involving public and private organizations and focusing on different work scales (multinational, national, regional and local).

The need for assessing regional sustainability performance has led the Algarve’s Coordination Commission of Regional Development (CCDR Algarve), with the support and scientific coordination of the University of Algarve, to develop the Algarve’s Sustainable Development Indicator System (SIDS Algarve), integrating the environmental, economic, social and institutional dimensions. The main challenges in the design of SIDS Algarve were: i) to contribute to the improvement of the decision making process; ii) to promote and facilitate access to information; iii) to engage local communities in the discussion of the main regional sustainability issues; iv) to increase institutional cooperation through networking with various regional stakeholders.   To ensure the achievement of these goals, public participation workshops were conducted in all of the region’s municipalities and thematic meetings were carried out with several regional organizations. A broad set of indicators was developed and, from those, a subset of headline indicators was selected. Different platforms to communicate the regional sustainability were also produced in order to meet the specific needs of different users, including decision makers, practitioners and general public.

Following the goals defined in the previous edition in 2004, the international seminar on Sustainable Development Indicators “Integrated sustainability assessment and reporting” aims to promote and communicate the results of SIDS Algarve and to share knowledge and international experiences, with a focus on the role of indicators in sustainability assessment and communication at the regional scale. This event also tries to ensure the presence of international experts on the main issues and challenges of monitoring sustainability and its strategic tools. Those issues include several aspects such as the importance of the institutional component of sustainability, the conceptual models, the articulation between different territorial scales and the role of public and private organizations and civil society.
