PERSPECTIVES

What happened to the metaverse?

"Just a few years ago there was a flurry of activity to create virtual digital worlds such as Linden Labs’ Second Life for interaction in spaces some call the metaverse. At that point in time, the prediction was that these worlds would far surpass Facebook and MySpace as the places that we’d want to gather and interact. The thinking was that the almost real-life interpersonal connections in these virtual worlds would cause us to congregate. The flurry of early adoption hasn’t sustained, and if anything we’re far less virtual but more constantly connected today."

Beyond Visualisation: Intelligent City
Planning and Management

3D visualisation models have a variety of applications in geography and urban studies, including site location analysis, emergency facilities planning, design review and marketing. A pressing problem facing many of these models is their general inability to engage the vast majority of their users and the people whose lives they influence in a meaningful and intuitive fashion.

Quantifying and Analyzing Farm Sustainability

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have released the Illinois Farm Sustainability Calculator (IFSC), an open-source, spreadsheet-based model capable of quantifying and analyzing various measures of environmental sustainability for any farm in the state of Illinois.

Digital Cities, SDI and the GeoWeb
ron_lake_thumbWhen a domain is relatively new, the terminology is often imprecise, and many different words many be coined and used by different organizations and individuals with none of them realizing that they are talking about essentially the same thing. This is substantially true for the use of Digital City and SDI as applied to urban environments.
REVIEW
Rethinking Maps
thumb-rethinking_maps75Today the discussion surrounding maps and cartography is growing. The Internet is allowing more people in different places to experience map use digitally through a wide variety of devices. This use is creating questions about maps, mapping and cartography. Editors Martin Dodge, Rob Kitchin and Chris Perkins have gathered togather a collection of contributors, each writing about the changing nature of maps, cartography and their use. The book 'Rethinking Maps - New frontiers in cartographic theory' is not only about mapping today, it describes where mapping might be in the future and provides insightful considerations for thinking about the many changes happening in the pursuit of cartography.
