PERSPECTIVES

What is intelligent infrastructure, and how do geospatial tools contribute?

"Intelligent infrastructure combines sensors, network connectivity and software to monitor and analyze complex systems to uncover inefficiency and inform optimal operations. The sensor component collects operational detail over time as well as providing real-time inputs on current conditions. The network connectivity ensures the flow of information between systems, other sensors, and practitioners. The software component provides oversight and analysis, integrating insight from various systems and personnel. The approach incorporates the management of multiple processes for more collaborative and multidisciplinary workflows. Intelligence is constantly improving from such a system through incremental improvements that are informed through constant monitoring and analysis."
-- Matt Ball, editor - Americas / Asia Pacific

If sustainability means to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations, pedestrian simulation software can contribute to this aim in the field of building design and engineering. Simulation of human walking allows to identify planned or existing flaws regarding pedestrian comfort and security in buildings, urban areas or transport facilities that will threaten the current and future use of these facilities.

It used to be that good design was signified by form following function, but as we’ve moved through the first decade of the 21st century, it’s clear that good design requires so much more. While function is still primary, there are many other factors inherent to good design.  Factors like sustainability, affordability, usability and reliability. And wrapped around those factors are ever-more subjective notions of beauty and emotional appeal.

SDIs and Regional Competitiveness
Steven_Ramage_1Spatial_thumbSDIs are being developed to help address environmental concerns, disaster preparedness and emergency responsiveness, but there are other possibilities for benefiting from SDIs, namely regional competitiveness. This could mean public sector organisations who are currently experiencing budget cuts across the board could use activities relating to geospatial data to minimise budget cuts or maintain existing budget levels. This is because their activities provide a positive contribution to the regional economy, especially where the overriding objective is to build a knowledge economy.

SPAR 2010 Focuses on Vertical Markets with a Great Deal of Practical Applications

SPAR2010_smallThe SPAR 2010 Conference took place in The Woodlands, Texas from Feb. 8-10. This gathering of vendors and practioners in a hot technical topic drew an enthusiastic crowd of roughly 750 people, despite a travel-hampered week due to East coast weather. This year's event placed a focus on practical use of the technology, with apllication-centric conference tracks on topics such as security, industrial plant, foensics, scan to BIM and mobile surveying.

Imagina 2010 - Part 2

Imagina_small imagina 2010 was recently held in Monaco. The event included a 3D track together with an architecture and landscape-territory track this year , both of which proved highly successful. Several leaders in the 3D city, building and construction design space were present. Lively discussions and debates about the current future possibilities for evolving 3D technologies and applications were included. A 3D Ethics Charter was signed at the event.

INTERVIEWS
The Growing Excitement of Working in 3D

Limp_Fred_thumb_thumbFred Limp has been on the forefront of spatial technology research and development projects as the founder and past director of the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies at the University of Arkansas. Limp has written several prescient articles about the growing importance of 3D in the geospatial sphere, and continues to work on interesting research projects that involve the application of 3D data collection, integration and analysis tools to pressing problems. V1 Magazine editor Matt Ball spoke with Limp about his work and the trends in the 3D space.

IVS 3D - Efficiency in Visual Ocean Processes

Christian_Relling_75dpi_thumb

Visualizing the ocean is not an easy task - moreso when it comes to 3D. It requires accurate geodata, spatial tools like CAD and GIS and knowledge about the processes involved. The work is directly applicable to marine monitoring, pipeline construction and other engineering related projects. V1 Magazine editor Jeff Thurston spoke with Christian Relling of IVS 3D about that company's work in world's oceans and to learn more about the efficiency gains through the use of their technologies.
