PERSPECTIVES

What are some areas of market growth for the geospatial industry?

"All of the areas of growth that I’ll explore will require an expansion of the current geospatial toolset, and will likely involve new players. Given the focus of Vector1 Media on sustainability, I’ll look primarily at areas that stand to gain greatly by balancing the needs of the economy, the environment and society."

 The European Urban Atlas -
Supporting City Habitability

Consumption of natural land for settlements, industry and transport infrastructure proceeds with an alarming pace in Europe and disagrees with the stagnating population. Every three years we lose a surface area equivalent to the size of Luxemburg.

Pour a glass of water out of a kitchen tap throughout the Canterbury region of New Zealand and chances are you’ll be staring at what many consider the finest drinking water in the world. Cool, clear and untouched, it’s originated in the mountains of the Southern Alps, travelled across the Canterbury Plains in the large braided river systems and then filtered slowly through the alluvial shingles before settling in large natural aquifers.

WHITE PAPER: Extending 3D Models Beyond Application Dead Ends

We are quickly moving toward a world where intelligent 3D models will interface with sensor systems for a realistic, up-to-date picture of our world. But for this vision to become a reality, we need compatibility and connectivity between different tools, data types and data models. Vector1 Media has partnered with Safe Software to explore this interoperability between 3D data formats.

COLUMNS
Micro-Location Overview: Beyond the Metre...to the Centimetre
thumb_steven_feldman60.jpgAdvances in tracking and location technologies are enabling new application development. These applications can be found in environmental, utility, transport and other industrial applications. Many new approaches are being developed for more personal and local use and these applications include in-store location, hospitals, airports and inside buildings. In this column Steven Feldman takes a look at some of these applications and provides his unique views on some of the recent developments.

GIS, Sustainability and the Winds of Change

gale_tony.gifAmerica’s first-ever climate change president, Barrack Obama is making substantial changes in the way we approach energy, the environment, and our economy. These changes will impact how we manage where our energy comes from (the supply side) and how we use it (the demand side). This will not only affect the future of our economy and our national security, it will also have tremendous influence on the sustainability of our country and planet.

WA-Trans Provides a Vision for Road Data Integration
griffin_tami.jpgThe state of Washington is coordinating an ambitious effort to normalize transportation data from multiple counties into a common repository called the Washington State Transportation Framework (WA-Trans). V1 Magazine editor Matt Ball spoke with Tami Griffin, WA-Trans project manager, about the technical and collaborative hurdles that she is addressing in order to provide the best up-to-date data on roads, railways, ferries, aviation, ports, and non-motorized transportation infrastructure in her state.
Autodesk Integrates Sustainable Design
danby_dawn.jpgAutodesk has embraced the concept of sustainable design and is working to integrate these principals into tools to facilitate wider application. V1 Magazine editor Matt Ball spoke with Dawn Danby, sustainable design program manager at Autodesk about how these concepts are being applied, and the future promise of this approach that considers the environment and the community as guiding design criteria.

BOOKSTORE

  By Lynne E. Johnson

With an introduction to primary remote sensing as well as methods of interpretation and analysis, the text focuses on how GIS data can be applied to water resource analysis models.

By Edward H. Isaaks and R. Mohan Srivastava

This book is remarkable in the statistical literature and unique in geostatistics in that concepts and models are introduced from the needs of data analysis rather than from axioms or through formal derivations.

By Russell G. Congalton and Kass Green

The field of accuracy assessment of maps derived from remotely sensed data has continued to grow since the first edition of this groundbreaking book published in 1999. This much anticipated update is significantly expanded and enhanced.
