PERSPECTIVES

How Can We Communicate that Geospatial Technology Matters?

"We’re living in a time that requires strong actions, and GIS is essential to inform our actions for maximum efficiency. We need to do a better job as an industry  educating decision makers about why geospatial technology matters."

Towards Flood Resilient Cities

Cities are evolving systems. We have little understanding of their behaviour. We know that they are highly dynamic, in that they face changing environments and inputs, and adapt to these changes. Over a longer historical period, cities have always successfully adapted to changing environmental conditions and thus have been extremely resilient. From 1100 to 1800, only 42 cities worldwide were deserted after their construction.

WHITE PAPER: Extending 3D Models Beyond Application Dead Ends

We are quickly moving toward a world where intelligent 3D models will interface with sensor systems for a realistic, up-to-date picture of our world. But for this vision to become a reality, we need compatibility and connectivity between different tools, data types and data models. Vector1 Media has partnered with Safe Software to explore this interoperability between 3D data formats.

Micro-Location Overview: Beyond the Metre...to the Centimetre
thumb_steven_feldman60.jpgAdvances in tracking and location technologies are enabling new application development. These applications can be found in environmental, utility, transport and other industrial applications. Many new approaches are being developed for more personal and local use and these applications include in-store location, hospitals, airports and inside buildings. In this column Steven Feldman takes a look at some of these applications and provides his unique views on some of the recent developments.

INTERVIEWS
   Tracking Ships Around the Globe

richard_proud_60.jpgjulian_longson_60.jpgOcean going ships are not presently required to carry tracking devices. But renewed interest in safety and security issues is generating growing interest in knowing where these vessels are located, and which is soon to be required. This poses many challenges because a system needs to be developed that integrates this information internationally, yet, remains sensitive to the needs of individual countries territorial waters and the shipping industry. Vector1 Media editor Jeff Thurston interviewed Richard Proud (left) of ComSine Ltd. and Julian Longson (right) of Pole Star Space Applications Ltd where both companies are developing these applications.

WA-Trans Provides a Vision for Road Data Integration
griffin_tami.jpgThe state of Washington is coordinating an ambitious effort to normalize transportation data from multiple counties into a common repository called the Washington State Transportation Framework (WA-Trans). V1 Magazine editor Matt Ball spoke with Tami Griffin, WA-Trans project manager, about the technical and collaborative hurdles that she is addressing in order to provide the best up-to-date data on roads, railways, ferries, aviation, ports, and non-motorized transportation infrastructure in her state.

EVENT REPORT

ASPRS Reflects on the Past, and Provides a Vision for the Future
asprs75years.jpg The 75th annual American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Annual Conference took place in Baltimore, Maryland from March 9-13, 2009. This landmark event drew an international audience of more than 1,500 people, with the theme, "Reflection of the Past, Vision for the Future". The reflection portion of the theme was evident in a multimedia exhibit that recounted the history of the society as well as a special anniversary celebration. The vision part of the theme was explored in many different sessions that focused on the future of the industry.

BOOKSTORE

  By Karen Steede-Terry

This comprehensive reference answers the myriad questions involved in combining these two systems for maximum benefit.

  By C.R. Drane

This work focuses on the role of positioning systems in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), the major types of positioning systems, the relationship between them and the methods for evaluating their performance.

By Harvey J. Miller

Given its coverage, the book should also encourage new insights among those of us already immersed in GIS-T in one arena or another, as well provide as an excellent reference to a great deal of past work.
