| PERSPECTIVES |
| Is Real-time Geodata Important? |
|
"Ten year's ago real-time geodata was more or less a dream. Five year's ago most people began to see more real-time data and were talking about it, but it was still something for the adventurous with deep pockets, who could afford to acquire it, process it and distribute it in a useful manner. This is changing as digital sensors, hardware and software are becoming more highly integrated and available." WHITE PAPER: Extending 3D Models Beyond Application Dead Ends We are quickly moving toward a world where intelligent 3D models will interface with sensor systems for a realistic, up-to-date picture of our world. But for this vision to become a reality, we need compatibility and connectivity between different tools, data types and data models. Vector1 Media has partnered with Safe Software to explore this interoperability between 3D data formats.

| EVENT REPORTS |
| Smart Moves in San Francisco - SmartGeometry 2009 |
SmartGeometry 2009 was held in San Francisco, California during March
27 - April 1. It included a workshop, a
public Alumni Summit and a public Conference and Reception. An audience
of students and professionals from around the world attended this
year's event. Focusing upon intelligent computational design,
SmartGeometry 2009 is an opportunity to learn, share and showcase the
emerging practice of digital parametrics within the AEC community using
Bentley GenerativeComponents (GC). Architect and columnist Don Chong
attended the event and reports on what he saw and learned. |
| SPAR 2009 Promotes Better Measurement for Success |
The SPAR 2009 Conference, which took place in Denver, Colorado from
March 30 to April 1, drew a diverse audience of vendors, service
providers and end users of terrestrial LIDAR. The more than 600
attendees at this event speak to the strong interest in 3D data
collection, and the benefits of this technology for asset management,
building construction and renovation, public safety and security, and
plant monitoring and management. |

Ocean
going ships are not presently required to carry tracking devices, but
renewed interest in safety and security issues are generating growing
interest in knowing where these vessels are located. This poses many challenges because a system needs to be
developed that integrates this information internationally, yet,
remains sensitive to the needs of individual countries. Vector1 Media editor Jeff Thurston
interviewed both Richard Proud (left) of ComSine Ltd. and Julian Longson
(right) of Pole Star Space Applications Ltd, two companies that are
developing this capability.
