PERSPECTIVES

How does sustainable development relate to the business of geospatial technologies?

"The idea of long-term maintenance is an essential component of sustainability. Individually, thinking about every purchase is the way to combat our throw away culture, and to place fewer stresses on our planet. Wrapping your business plan around the concept of sustainable development means a long-term commitment to customers that delivers value and maximizes their efficiency."

Quantifying and Analyzing Farm Sustainability
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have released the Illinois Farm Sustainability Calculator (IFSC), an open-source, spreadsheet-based model capable of quantifying and analyzing various measures of environmental sustainability for any farm in the state of Illinois.

As humans, we have an innate and natural tendency to establish patterns and associations in our environment. Consider for a moment, the capability of the human brain to “process millions of visual, acoustic, olfactory, tactile, and motor data, and…the astonishing ability to learn from experience, generalize from learned rules, recognize patterns, and make decisions”.

thumb-rethinking_maps75Today the discussion surrounding maps and cartography is growing. The Internet is allowing more people in different places to experience map use digitally through a wide variety of devices. This use is creating questions about maps, mapping and cartography. The book 'Rethinking Maps - New frontiers in cartographic theory' is not only about mapping today, it describes where mapping might be in the future and provides insightful considerations for thinking about the many changes happening in the pursuit of cartography.
