pTolemy3D Open Source Viewer Makes It Easy To Put Your Content Into 3D

SpatialCloud, a geospatial web services provider allowing users to process, host, and distribute data, is proud to announce the release of their complementary open source java/web based 3D viewer called pTolemy3D. The pTolemy3D viewer is an independent open source project which can be used to develop custom 3D mapping applications on a globe without restraints. This unique 3D viewer is truly open source while also being a Java based browser client. This means there is no need for extra software or installs, nor traditional per seat licensing/maintenance fees.

“pTolemy3D is an asset to organizations and individuals who need better control over their 3D geoweb applications,” stated SpatialCloud’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Mark Korver. “Because the viewer is truly open source, developers can create 3D earth visualization experiences which the developer fully controls. Additionally, pTolemy3D.org is focused on making the creation of new data easy using standard technologies. Developers can build rich web applications around the viewer using standard AJAX techniques and compose data for their environment using technologies such as Jpeg 2000, OpenGL, and OpenGIS standards (including WMS and WFS).”

View Demo & Download Tool Kit
pTolemy3D is a completely free, open source, and Java JOGL-based application. It has been released under the GPLv3 License. Interested parties may view a demo application by visiting pTolemy3D.org and developers may download and install the “ptconsole web application” tool kit which allows creation of 3D worlds via WMS services.

Help Guide Project, Join Developer Community
The community around the open source pTolemy3D viewer is recognized as an important aspect of this project. Join the growing community of pTolemy3D developers which already includes actors in the United States, Japan, Spain, and France. Get started by signing up to be part of the e-mail list & discussion (via pTolemy3D’s Google Group), post issues/bugs to the project’s Trac site, and/or contribute to pTolemy3D codebase via pTolemy3D.org.

Your Organization Need 3D? Sponsor pTolemy3D pTolemy3D is developed and supported by a number of people around the world with the project’s main sponsor being SpatialCloud. However, pTolemy3D is always looking for new strategic sponsors to help project grow and benefit sponsoring groups. If your organization needs an effective 3D visualization tool and are in a position to support the development of pTolemy3D, please contact them about sponsorship.

Open Future With Endless Possibility
The future is compelling because the possible applications and growth of an open viewer such as pTolemy3D are endless. Users may include governments, corporations, businesses, organizations, and individuals who have an interest in distributing mapping data to any number of clients. In-house developers or consultants can utilize pTolemy3D as a vital resource which limits costs, making 3D applications a reality.

Current plans by the project team including continuing to foster the codebase and community via pTolemy3D.org. This site will be regularly updated with new developments, releases, and plans. Further, for those interested, SpatialCloud’s cloud web services will be released later this year and allow even more compelling geospatial solutions to pTolemy3D users.
