3D Mapping of Atmospheric Gases

by Matt Ball on March 13, 2009

A team of scientists at the University of Leicester, Surrey Satellite Technology and EADS Astrium are working to commercialize a new sensor network to map air pollution levels. The new technology is said to be able to scan entire urban areas to provide a very detailed assessment of pollutants in the atmosphere. The plan is for both ground-based and satellite-based sensors they they’re calling the CityScan project. The spectrometer operates in the ultra violet and visible part of the spectrum. The devices are tuned to pick up readings from atmospheric gases such as nitrogen dioxide at a 50m resolution over a coverage area of more than 25 square kilometers.
