Alamosa Water Woes

by Matt Ball on March 25, 2008

Salmonella was confirmed in the Alamosa, Colo. municipal water supply, leading to a weeks-long water crisis. As many as 215 people have been sickened by the tainted water, and residents are being told not to drink or bathe in the water until it is fully treated. Residents are drinking bottled water that is being trucked into the community.
Alamosa’s water comes from five deep wells, and is untreated before being consumed. I was interested to learn that roughly 50% of municipal water sources in the U.S. comes from similar sources, without treatment prior to consumption.

The town has posted many details about the outbreak.
