Scientists at Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) are working with coastal communities and state government to map coastal impacts of climate change, with aim toward helping design plans for sea and weather impacts. The potential impact is huge, given the fact that half of Australia’s addresses are within seven kilometers from the coast. That equates to 710,000 coastal homes at risk from rising sea levels or major storms.
The researchers have used climate projections and demographic data to create vulnerability maps for climate impacts, including rising sea level, droughts, bushfires, and extreme rainfall. The researchers also took a look at potential ways to adapt to these changes.
