The National BIM Standard Executive Committee has released National BIM Standard Version 1 – Part 1: Overview, Principles, and Methodologies. This first publication incorporates the expertise of 30 subject area experts and lays the groundwork for further discussion.
Among the areas of immediate activity are BIM/GIS integration, and the release of this publication coincides with the announced collaboration between The Open Geospatial Consortium and buildingSMART alliance for a testbed to advance BIM interoperability.
These organizations are actively seeking sponsors to advance testbed objectives, including the development of use cases, outlining the technology objectives, and establishing the schedule. More details about the testbed process can be found in the presentation that was given at the Fall 2007 AEC-ST Conference. The deadline for contact with OGC is Jan. 31, 2008, as the testbed is moving forward rapidly.
I’m excited by the prospect of GIS and BIM convergence, and look forward to following this process closely in 2008 and beyond.
