Canada is set to launch two 20-foot autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) next month to expand their mapping efforts on the Arctic floor. The AUVs are ideally equipped for this mission in the Arctic, because they can continuously collect data for the 2,500-mile mission and don’t need to resurface. The thick ice of the eastern Arctic poses problems for traditional icebreaker methods as the ice is under constant high pressure that makes it impassible by other means.
