CH2M HILL has just completed a solar mapping portal for Los Angeles County. This is the company’s largest solar portal in terms of geographic area to date, joining San Francisco’s award-winning solar map that was completed last year. The portal offers a means for citizens to estimate their solar potential, along with details on rebates and subsidies that would make the investment feasible.
The Los Angeles mapping effort was considerable, involving the mapping of more than 3,000 square miles and the creation of a detailed 3D model for each of the county’s 1,100 municipal buildings. The rooftops of government buildings were mapped to demonstrate solar potential, taking into consideration roof slope and the location of roof structures such as ducts and air conditioning units.
The site aims to be a one-stop resource for all solar details in the county. There’s a reference site for solar installers, a news portal, detailed steps to install solar power, and an aggregate of the location of completed solar projects in the county. The project details include the size of projects in KWH, the amount of money saved, and the amount of CO2 saved, with a form for residents to showcase their own projects.
