The History Channel held the “City of the Future” design and engineering challenge recently, with regional competitions in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. The goal of the design competition was to envision the future of each city in 2108, a century from now. An alliance between EDAW, BNIM, Praxis 3, and Metcalf & Eddy won the contest with their design of Atlanta.

EDAW’s environmentally-sensitive and green design won out in large part for their treatment of water issues. The is currently undergoing a four-year severe drought, which raises awareness of the issue. The EDAW team instructed planners to bring Atlanta’s creeks to the surface and incorporate forests within the city center to cleanse the air. The return to the original natural systems would allow for a green infrastructure to return to the sprawling city.
