There’s an in-depth cover story in the April issue of Wired magazine on, “Why the new generation of tablet computers changes everything.” The piece has a central thread that speaks to the impact of the iPad, and a number of quotes from different IT visionaries and media luminaries, that include Bob Stein, Nicholas Negroponte, Martha Stewart, Chris Anderson and Marshall McLuhan.
Jack’s quote deals with GeoDesign:
“Planning a garden, park, building, or city shouldn’t be done in an office. A location-aware tablet will let us use what’s called geodesign to compose participatory, what-if scenarios onsite, using maps that several people can share—something we could always do with paper but that’s been a challenge with digital maps in the field.”
It’s great to see mapping recognized as an important media player in the context of this media-changing platform, and for Jack to get the spotlight for his vision and his company’s innovation. Like geodesign, the concept of the tablet isn’t new, but now all the pieces (wireless 3G, content, speed, form factor, etc.) are all in place for the tablet to finally have a large impact.
The issue is out on newsstands now, and the page with Dangermond’s quote can be found online here. (Thanks to Andrew Zolnai for the link.)
