The Times of India reports today the the ambitious government-run project to map Delhi in 3D is on hold now due to the recession. The manpower-intensive second phase of the project that involved physical inspections of each building was supposed to begin in early December. A subsidiary of the Survey of India is responsible for this project, and they’re currently in discussions with PSU banks to arrange loans in order to complete the project.

This ambitious mapping project aims to capture the entire city in 3D at great accuracy, including the underground infrastructure. The project will employ 2,000 people at a cost of 12o crore Rs (roughly $2.5 million). Some of the touted benefits of the project are an ability to track and control construction activities as well as provide a means to validate the data of various competing government agencies.
