DeWalt began selling a MobileLock receiver and service for use to combat construction site theft in late Spring of 2007. The lock is equipped with both a GPS receiver and cellular communication to use cell tower triangulation when a GPS signal can’t be obtained.
You simply attach the device to your asset, and then can track the location. The device is mounted via screws or magnets and can be placed in view as a deterrent or hidden as a means to catch recurring thieves. In addition to the location technology, the device also has a motion detector, temperature sensor and vibration sensor.
The device runs $499, and the service is $19.95/mo. for five locates per month.
The service includes nationwide cellular coverage without roaming fees and there’s technical support/customer service included.
The Web Service uses Microsoft Virtual Earth for the mapping component, and there’s are multiple interactive elements that let you configure the device and service to fit your needs.
I spend a good deal of my spare time on woodworking and construction projects. I’ve finished a few basements, built many decks and built my dream three-car garage and workshop before moving to cut down on driving. When I moved, I put my new workshop in the garage and went six months before my favorite tool, a DeWalt 12″ compound sliding miter saw, was stolen.
It was a harsh wakeup to city life, and I’ve since become a bit paranoid about my garage security. I’m not going to run out and buy one of these pricey units for personal use, but I truly appreciate the device and service, and am sure it will help many contractors to get a handle on rampant construction-site theft.
The new house that we moved into had some copper pipes stolen during construction, and the garage was broken into and tools stolen prior to our move in. It’s a big issue in any construction site, and I’m sure this device and service will help greatly.
