Economic turmoil, cheap oil, tabled wind farm plans, massive layoffs, car makers in trouble, and now this. Today I learned that my trusted breakfast partner, The Rocky Mountain News, is in considerable trouble.
I’m one of a dieing group of people that read a daily newspaper religiously, and for years it’s been the Rocky. The parent company has put the paper on the selling block, but I’m hard pressed to think of anyone that would buy a newspaper these days, particularly when thereĀ are reports that they will lose $15 million this year due to lackluster advertising sales, and a meager Classifieds revenue.
While I’m online constantly, I still find the printed page a comfort, and my top news source for information of personal interest and civic relevance. A paper is an important bond of community that has been part of my daily life since as long as I can remember.
All papers seem in trouble these days, and Denver is one of just a few major cities that is still a two newspaper town, but it’s the voice of this paper that I’ve really grown to love. I’m not sure there’s another local option that will fill the same information void for me.
Rocky, please don’t go!
