The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) opened last week. This institution aims to be a leading authority on environmental threats, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and climate change. This Research Centre of Excellence is devoted to earth sciences, and already has its first major project underway, a 1,5000 kilometer GPS network along the west Sumatran coast to provide geophysical observations of the area. The institute will receive $150 million in funding over 10 years from the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation.
