Earthquake Sensing Satellites Proposed

by Matt Ball on June 11, 2008

I reported earlier regarding a plan to study the electrical disturbance in the atmosphere that occurs prior to an earthquake. Now there’s word that Surrey Satellite Technology Limited proposes a constellation of 20 satellites to monitor this warning signal from space.

There’s a considerable problem in predicting earthquakes, with current detection systems only capable of a few minutes notice. The electrical charge that occurs as pressure builds up for a quake can be detected weeks in advance.

Read more about the science and the plan here.
