El Niño May Have Helped Magellan

Researchers suggests that the weather phenomenon of El Niño may have helped Ferdinand Magellan in the first trip around the world in 1520. Anthropologists Scott M. Fitzpatrick of North Carolina State University and Richard Callaghan of the University of Calgary, Canada conclude that Magellan’s route may have been dictated by mild weather conditions.

Their research is summarized in last week’s journal Science, and there’s a nice feature that outlines their findings in The Los Angeles Times.
