Electric Dirt Bikes

by Matt Ball on July 28, 2008

One of my more popular blog posts discusses an extreme sports neighborhood that is being planned in Colorado. The idea is a neighborhood built around a dirt bike track rather than a golf course. I think it’s a great idea for adrenalin junkies, but expressed some concern about the noise — hoping to see quiet electric bikes in use instead of noisy 2-stroke bikes that would also add a lot of emissions.

I’ve just learned about a company called Zero Motorcycles that is manufacturing an electric dirt bike. The bike is designed by Neal Saiki, an ex-NASA engineer that designed a human-powered helicopter in college and also became a famous mountain bike designer.

The ZeroX was recently featured in Popular Mechanics, and there are a number of good videos of the bike on YouTube. I love the fact that it’s light, fast, quiet and clean. The company is also working on a street bike and a commuter.
