Fund to Fight Climate Change

by Matt Ball on January 29, 2008

The G7 countries are looking at the joint creation of a fund specifically designed to fight climate change. Japan, Britain and the United States plan to make the proposal during a meeting of financial chiefs from the Group of Seven industrialized nations on February 9, according to the Jiji Press. The additional G7 countries are Canada, France, Germany and Italy. The fund would be aimed at helping developing countries improve energy-saving technologies, with the World Bank managing the fund.

According to a Reuters story, President Bush was slated to commit $2 Billion to the fund during his State of the Union speech. I poured over the transcript, and didn’t find reference that figure, but there is mention of the fund.

I think this is a positive move toward taking a larger responsibility in the developed world for the dreams of the developing world. It’s clear that we can’t expect a sustainable planet if our levels of consumption are replicated worldwide.
