Georgia Launches Conservation Mapping Effort

Georgia has launched a three-year, $1.1 million mapping project to inventory biological and natural resources in 11 counties on or near the coast. The project is largely funded by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation ($700,000), and will be conducted by the Department of Natural Resources, the Georgia Conservancy and the Association of County Commissioners.

The aim of the effort is to supply local governments with inventory maps in order to make sound land-use decisions about where they’ll allow development. There are concerns that the rapid growth on the coast will harm drinking water supplies, habitats and public lands.
