The GigaPan Epic Imager is available for commercial sale today at a price point of $379. The device is a robotic mount that accommodates most digital cameras, allowing you to combine many different shots into a large image with zoom and pan features. I’ve reported previously about this creative application of NASA Mars Rover technology, and have been anxiously awaiting its commercial debut. It’s an impressive way to collect highly detailed and high-resolution images that undoubtedly has utility in geospatial applications.
One of the coolest things about this camera is the web interface to zoom and pan the resulting image that is captured. A good sample shot, if you aren’t already familiar with the technology, is this image from the Inauguration.
