Google Maps Gets Video

by Matt Ball on December 17, 2008

Today Google added a video layer into Google Maps under the More button at the top. The feature adds geotagged YouTube videos along with Wikipedia and Panoramio content. Choosing the video tab populates the map with a large number of video thumbnails that can be played directly in the map interface. While this feature isn’t really new, because you could find videos on Google Maps before, it does make the videos much more accessible.

I took a look at a number of the different videos posted and feel there needs to be a better filtering mechanism. The medium is a great means for informative tours of places, but really shouldn’t be open to any and every video that’s geotagged. I found too much clutter here that had nothing to do with the place other than that it was filmed there. While that’s an important element if the video shows a place in its true light, it isn’t very helpful if the video is just some silly amateur stunt filmed indoors and meant for just a small audience of friends or family.
