India Deploys Remote Sensing to Trace Missing Official

by Matt Ball on September 3, 2009

Yesterday morning, the helicopter carrying popular Indian politician, Andhra Pradesh chief minister Rajasekhara Reddy, went missing, raising concerns about his safety. The disappearance of the helicopter in heavy rains in an area of known rebel activity has heightened concerns. The helicopter took off from Hyderabad, the state capital, and lost contact with air traffic controllers over the dense Nallamalla forest. The Indian Remote Sensing Research Organization (ISRO) deployed an aircraft with synthetic aperture radar remote sensing capability to help find the aircraft, flying low missions over the area where the helicopter was thought to have gone down.

UPDATE: Sadly, the wreckage of the helicopter was found early this AM, with all five occupants killed in a fiery crash.
