India to Launch Student-Built Remote Sensing Satellite

by Matt Ball on February 19, 2009

The Indian Space Research Institute (ISRO) will launch a satellite developed by Anna University students during the next flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle scheduled for March-April of this year. The micro satellite was built by students with parts and guidance from the ISRO satellite center in Bangalore. ISRO has previously launched nano satellites developed by foreign universities, including Canadian, Dutch and Japanese institutions.

The student satellite, called Anusat, will accompany the launch of Risat, a read imaging satellite that will give ISRO the capability to image in cloudy weather and at night. Previously India has worked with the Canadian Radarsat program to obtain radar imagery.
