India’s Eco-Towns Signal an Embrace of an Urban Future

India has embarked on the creation of a series of “eco-towns” along the Dedicated Freight Corridor that connects Mumbai to Delhi. The pilot projects are modeled on Japan’s Kitayushu Eco-town, and have significant support from Japanese companies, including Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Toshiba and Tokyo Electric Power. The initiative embraces urban growth as a means for economic expansion, and also takes a much more planned approach than India is used to (the country didn’t have a central planning operation until 1992).
