There’s an interesting story in the Times of India today about the work of a census enumerator in that country’s last census in 2001. There are some interesting parallels to the issues that enumerators for the U.S. Census face, such as tirades against the government and the difficulty in finding people at home. The bottom-line difficulty in both cases is the need to explain the significance of being counted, and the benefits of accurate population counts for their city, region and the country as a whole.
