Inspiring Gardener

by Matt Ball on April 20, 2009

So, I’m watching the short video for National Geographic’s The Green Effect contest, and at the end of it out pops my brother-in-law’s yard. Their neighbor is the organizer of Community Roots, a neighborhood supported agriculture effort where he farms the front yards of many families in the Martin Acres neighborhood of Boulder, Colorado.

kipThe Green Effect contest, sponsored by Sun Chips, offers up five $20,000 grants to individuals with an idea to green their community. The contest opens this Wednesday, with a deadline of June 8. Contest winners will travel to Washington, D.C. to present their ideas to environmental leaders, and will be featured in National Geographic magazine.

The productivity of the Community Roots garden has inspired me to try my hand, after growing up with my master gardener Mom’s food on my plate. It provides an inspiring story of people making a difference while making a living for themselves.
