Intel Explains Everyday Sensors

Intel has a passing interest in the idea of smart dust, but feels that if the sensor web market emerges it will take a long time, because they see no immediate business case and the investment is high. Instead the company has focused the efforts of their Everyday Sensing and Perception (ESP) working group on sensors within devices. The group is working on similar sensors to those that recognize the angle that you’re holding an iPhone or the accelerometers used in the Wii gaming device.

The chief of Intel’s research lab discussed some intriguing possible uses of handheld sensors, such as a controller that could recognize who was holding it that could bring up your favorites or limit a child’s access to programming. Another idea that they shared is a remote control that senses when your speaking to fast during a presentations and helps you slow down.
