Excellent summary of the challenges current or potential geospatial professionals need to ponder regarding certification. I became certified right out of the gate in early 2004 with the only goal being to have a certification. Like many GIS professionals, my job is with a local government, and having the GISP after my name didn't automatically garner a raise or extra recognition. However, it did validate that my peers that were reviewing my experience and education felt that I ws deserving of the title.

None of us could have fathomed the disruptive, yet incredible innovations and delivering of geospatial data to the masses provided by Google and Microsoft. Bird's-eye views of my city (much less Google StreetView), were a pipe-dream back in 2004, but now even the non-geospatial practitioner deals with them frequently. The GISP certification will have to continue to adapt its requirements in the realm of web-based technologies to remain current. I welcome any technologies that advance geospatial data into the public. In fact, I've always operated under the mantra that when geospatial data use is so commonplace that people don't evey realize they're using it (ala Google Earth), then GIS has truly "arrived".

Keep up the great work on the blog!
