Japan Uses Satellite to Track Illegal Dumping

The government of Iwate in Japan has begun to use satellite images from the Daichi earth observation satellite to track the accumulation of industrial waste. The 2.5 meter color imagery from the satellite is being archived over time and analyzed at Iwate University. The project has uncovered several illegal waste disposal sites, and the effort will be expanded in the coming year.
