Korea Aims to Promote their ‘Green Growth’ Approach to the World

by Matt Ball on August 23, 2010

When the world’s leaders gather in Seoul, Korea for the G20 Seoul Summit in November to discuss the global recovery and stronger economic growth, the Korean government will bring the attention of the G20 Leaders to the their theme of green growth as a catalyst for global cooperation. Korea has been working actively in an effort to harmonize growth aspirations with environmental balance, having launched both the East Asia Climate Partnership (EACP) and the Green Growth Institute (GGGI) this year.

Korea has embarked on an internal green growth strategy in 2008, with both a five-year green growth plan and a national strategy for green growth that spans 60 years. Among the targets in these plans is the reduction of greenhouse emissions and a move toward ‘ecological modernization’.

The Green Growth Institute is focused on building this capacity worldwide with a focus on projects and outreach to developing countries, who face particular challenges in adopting green strategies while also maintaining high economic growth in order to alleviate poverty.
