The city of Lenexa, Kansas has just posted an online web map of their Public Works Projects. The map posts construction, maintenance and repair projects throughout the city with easily determined icons for traffic projects, trails, watershed, parks, road/bridge improvements, and facilities management. The site provides a prominent scale bar, a zoom feature that indicates scale as you move the slider, and the ability to see a map, imagery or hybrid view.

The map interface is augmented with detailed project information when you click the icons. A tabbed pop-up window displays an overview of project information (including a project manager name and telephone number), an update tab that indicates how far along the project is, and a images tab with photos of the project site.

I enjoyed the simplicity and functionality of this next-generation web map, and am excited to see other cities adopt sites with similar ease of use. In fact, I’d love to see such a site in my own town with these details as I’m always curious about the projects and project timelines around me.
