I reported earlier on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) mapping of levees in San Joaquin County, Calif. The FEMA maps show that 730 miles of levees in the county wouldn’t be able to stand up to a 100-year flood. These newest FEMA maps require many residents to purchase flood insurance, and are effecting property values.
The county has responded recently with a new set of maps — for evacuation should the levees fail. The maps are available online here.
