In an effort to understand the role that fires play in global warming and atmospheric pollution, a team of researchers have mapped the annual occurrence of fire activity for seven years between 2000 and 2007. The resulting maps reveal that an area the size of India is burnt every year.
The seven years of data allows researchers to analyze trends and help predict outcomes and future occurrences. The data to make the maps was derived from the vegetation instrument aboard the SPOT European earth imaging satellite.
