Canada’s groundwater mapping program has fallen behind on its effort to assess the 30 key regional aquifers, according to a recent report. While the effort began some years ago, only 12 of these have been mapped to date, and it’s taking between three and five years to conduct each assessment. There is increasing pressure on these resources due to urban growth and agricultural water usage, while more than a third of the Canadian population receives its water from the ground. Political pressure is building to speed up the process.
