The Rocky Mountain Institute has created a map as part of the Google.org Geo Challenge Grants Program to map U.S. oil imports by country since 1973. The animated map shows both barrels and dollar values, illustrating how the flow of oil has changed over the past 35 years. The weight of the lines between countries is used to depict the amount of oil imported from that country.
The ebb and flow of oil, with price and production information, shows a complicated tale of supply and demand of this finite resource. The map also illustrates the potential supplies from offshore drilling and exploration in ANWAR.
The Rocky Mountain Institute and its co-founder Amory Lovins are engaged in oil solutions discussions, and Google is a strong supporter of their work. Read more on the Google.org blog.
