Mapping the Nation’s Alternative Fuel Locations

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has pulled together an interactive map that plots the location of alternative fueling stations and refineries across the country. The Google Maps mashup has a number of different “GIS Layers” that you can click on to see the location of liquified natural gas, propane, hydrogen, electric, compressed natural gas, E85 and biodiesel fueling sites. There are also details on production facilities, including ethanol capacity that takes into account planned facilities. Data for the site comes from NREL metrics as well as the Renewable Fuels Association.

Overall, the site provides a useful aggregation of alternative fuel details for teh United States. The site is useful for individuals looking for alternative fuels as well as policy makers that want to get a sense of overall trends and the growth of alternative fuels. Of particular note is the spread of E85 ethanol beyond it’s stronghold in the middle of the country.

There’s a very similar project thats been available for a while here: http://www.altfuelprices.com/

AltFuelPrices also includes user contributed data on the price of the alternative fuel at each location and for users to add new locations, but doesn’t include the location of production facilities as found in the NREL map.

Do you know if these two projects are related in anyway?
