The United States Conference of Mayors has pulled together a wishlist of projects for a “MainStreet Economic Recovery” plan, and many GIS projects are represented. Member mayors have each detailed how they would spend money in a comprehensive list of “Ready to Go” projects that are categorized by infrastructure type. The tally of the wish list has $19 billion of water-related projects, $24 billion of road projects, and more than $4 billion for airports.
Searching the list for GIS turned up a number of projects and opportunities, including:
- Bessemer, AL – GIS Mapping System – $400,000 – Streets/Roads
- Pine Bluff, AR – GIS Technology – $300,000 – Public Safety
- Glendora, CA – CAD,GIS and Records Management Upgrades – $2,490,000 – Public Safety
- Huntington Beach, CA – Utility Meter Inventory, GIS input – $150,000 – Energy
- Meriden, CT – Locate and enter all as-built infrastructure into GIS – $750,000 – Streets/Roads
- Hollywood, FL – Continue GIS improvement – $800,000 – Water
- Miami, FL – Citywide GIS archival registration of as-built documents – $1,500,000 – Streets/Roads
- Lombard, IL – GIS Upgrades – $350,000 – CDBG
- Manhattan, KS – Implement regional GIS – $450,000 – Public Safety
- Shreveport, LA – GIS program – $20,000,000 – Streets/Roads
- Winston-Salem, NC – Water and sewer GIS word – $2,700,000 – Water
- Buffalo, NY – Conversion of all paper records into GIS – $1,000,000 – Water
- McAllen, TX – Transit GIS planner – $40,254 – Transit
My tally of the total is almost $31 million for GIS projects, with the most lucrative sector being Streets/Roads followed by Public Safety. It’s good to see that GIS is being thought of as part of the infrastructure spend by mayors. It will be interesting to see how these local projects might mesh with the concept of a national GIS.
