Microsoft as Data Partner

The German-based mobile mapmaker 123map has entered into an agreement to license Microsoft’s “place of interest” data for the maps they deliver over phones and other devices.

123map has also launched an interesting map data comparison feature that compares OpenStreetMap data to Tele Atlas data. This online and interactive data comparison feature is called Flosm.

I asked Microsoft to clarify the data licensing question, and received this reply: “Specifically, 123map is licensing Microsoft IP that enables them to overlay information on a map image at a position corresponding to the location of the place of interest.” Therefore, it appears correct that there isn’t a data component to this agreement, despite the reporting by BetaNews.
