Microsoft Expands Data Provider Role

by Matt Ball on August 21, 2008

Today MapMart announced that Microsoft’s UltraCam imagery would be offered for download on the MapMart website. This announcement follows the report that Microsoft Virtual Earth data will be available to ESRI users as a service. This latest announcement leverages Microsoft’s considerable investment in imagery acquisition and places them in competition with all other imagery providers.

Users will now have access to Microsoft’s UltraCam high-resolution imagery for more than 260 cities. The imagery was collected at high overlap and 6” nominal resolution, then processed to create citywide orthomosaics with very little building lean. The imagery is very current and at very high resolution. There’s also the promise that this imagery will be regularly updated for existing locations, and that many more cities will be added.

This primarily urban data source should be a great boon for planners and those focused on urban infrastructure. MapMart is offering a free download of sample imagery for either Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida or Lombard Street in San Francisco. There’s an impressive list of full city imagery available, and they’re priced at a very competitive price of $50/square mile.

Its a great news that 6″ high resolution Micorsoft imagery is available for immediate download from Mapmart(www.mapmart.com). This will save a lot of money for companies who are planning to custom fly these areas.
